Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo

2015

This red wine is originally from the native Piedmonte region, and is extremely rare in NZ. Known as Italy’s King of Wines, the name Nebbiolo is derived from the word fog, which is thought to describe the thick, natural bloom covering the ripe berries during the Autumn. It has an aroma of cigar box, poupoum and violets. Deceptively weak looking, it has been bottled unfiltered to retain the natural liquorice and gamey flavours, with a hint of almond on the finish. Best enjoyed with family or friends with hearty foods. It’s very high tannins and high acids enable it to age up to 20 years, and is best cellared for 3 – 5 years before drinking.

Limited release of individually numbered Magnums(1.5L) and Double Magnums(3.0L) also available.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay

2016

Chardonnay in Matakana typically has a limey taste due to the clay & limestone bedrock.  Half of the vintage is barrel fermented, while the remaining 50% is fermented in stainless steel, before blending the 2 parts together before bottling.  The oak imparts a subtle vanilla flavour.

Matavino Chardonnay is simply surperb - citrus / lemon flavours typical of this region, it has subtle lime and mineral notes with a hint of oak on the finish.  Perfect for lunch on the deck with friends and family, and especially with Mahurangi Oysters.

Viognier

2015

Bright and clear with a soft golden glow in the glass, this rare grape variety generally does well in the Matakana Wine region. Its cocktail of subtle aromas include gooseberry, orange blossom, white peach, a hint of lychees, anise, and flint. It has interesting layers of flavours, with a long silky finish. The crisp, dry taste and luscious texture make this an enjoyable wine to drink under the sun umbrella with family and friends, or served with spicy Asian food or seafood.  The silky finish goes especially well with Mahurangi Oysters - my favourite!

Barbera

2015 / 2016

This native Piemonte grape variety grown in the Matakana region has a purple colour with a vibrant glow in the glass. With aromas of summer berry fruits which are tasted on the front of the mouth, it has a soft, earthy flavour of raspberry, blackberry and cherries. This is a lighter style red wine balanced with very low tannins but higher acidity, and is best enjoyed with food and family or friends. It has been bottled unfiltered to retain the natural flavours, and will age between 3 to 5 years. Barbera is rarely grown or available to purchase in NZ, so this is a unique wine.  Bob Campbell rated the 2014 Barbera 93/100.

Dolcetto

Dolcetto

2015

This grape variety from Piedmonte is grown in the Matakana region, and has a very deep purple colour. Although the name means 'sweet one', this wine is very dry. With aromas of licorice and marinated cherries, on the mouth it starts out with cherries which mellow out to doris plums with a burst of licorice to leave a soft velvety after taste. It is very low in acid but high in tannins, and so like most Italian red wines is best enjoyed with family or friends wnjoying food like pasta and pizza.  It has been bottled unfiltered to retain the natural flavours, and is best drunk 1 to 2 years from harvest.

Limited releases of individually numbered Magnums(1.5L) in wooden boxes also available.
